Lake Sano Nggoang
With a very good natural value, this lake becomes very exotic because it is located around the Mbeliling Forest area and the Sesok forest block, protected areas and groundwater recharge that supply clean water for the Labuanbajo community. In this forest area, especially around Sano Nggoang, we can go around riding horses that are owned by many people, and are provided for tourists to be able to enjoy beauty and comfort. The Mbeliling area has another function as a sanctuary for endemic plants and distinctive bird species.
Indeed, Mbeliling and Sano Nggoang have important research histories. There is already a lot of basic information about plants, the status and relative abundance of birds, malaria research, and traditional uses for plants. Some species are known to have links with species in Kalimantan, the Philippines, and Papua in the past. More than 20 new plant species have been described based on collections from Mbeliling.
To date these plant species have only been found in this region, including representatives of new clans for Nusa Tenggara (Urobotrya florensis and Sympetalandra schmutzii) and several tree species (Helicia sp. And Ternstroemia sp.) And several species of orchids (Corybas sp. and Coelogyme sp.) which cannot yet be described. This variety of plant species illustrates some unique knowledge about the evolutionary and biogeographic processes in Southeast Asia, including evidence of past relations with Kalimantan, the Philippines and Papua.
In addition, the diversity of endemic plants here is a natural pharmacy that is often used by the surrounding community as a sesok forest area for medicine, such as fever, flu, malaria, for pregnant women, childbirth, and cancer. Actually the existence of this volcanic lake is inseparable from the geological process that is still ongoing on Flores Island. According to some geologists, the West Manggarai region is composed of Volcanic Bows in Alkaline Calcium which are of the Cenozoic age, which are still active today.
In Flores there is indeed a relationship between the pattern of endemicity of plants and the peculiarities of birds, as can be found in Mbeliling forests. Compared to other conservation areas in Flores, Mbeliling forests have the highest number of bird species that have important conservation significance.
this number includes three of the four endemic species and 17 of the 20 other important bird species, such as water birds (Mountain ducks / Anas superciliosa, Anas gibberifrons); endemic species of Flores (Flores Crow / Corvus florensis); the type of distribution is limited (Tesia timor / Tesia everetti, Kipasan flores / Rhipidura is adopted, White-turtled Checks / Caridonax fulgidus). With the number of bird populations around the lake is still relatively large, the Sano Nggoang area is an attraction for bird watching. Other unique biological diversity includes blind snakes (Typhlops schmutzii), which are known to only be found on Komodo Island, West Flores, including in the Mbeliling forest.
In addition, the Wai Tiunga River region whose upper reaches are in the Mbeliling Mountains supports a number of populations of globally endangered estuarine crocodiles. In other places, the caves around Dhalong support several large populations of insectivorous bats. One of the Flores endemic mice, the giant Flores mouse lives in the Mbeliling region.
