Lake Sano Nggoang

This variety of plant species illustrates some unique knowledge about the evolutionary and biogeographic processes in Southeast Asia, including evidence of past relations with Kalimantan, the Philippines and Papua.
In addition, the diversity of endemic plants here is a natural pharmacy that is often used by the surrounding community as a sesok forest area for medicine, such as fever, flu, malaria, for pregnant women, childbirth, and cancer. Actually the existence of this volcanic lake is inseparable from the geological process that is still ongoing on Flores Island. According to some geologists, the West Manggarai region is composed of Volcanic Bows in Alkaline Calcium which are of the Cenozoic age, which are still active today.
In Flores there is indeed a relationship between the pattern of endemicity of plants and the peculiarities of birds, as can be found in Mbeliling forests. Compared to other conservation areas in Flores, Mbeliling forests have the highest number of bird species that have important conservation significance.
