Tolukko Fortress
Tolukko Fortress is in Sangadji Village, North Ternate District, Ternate City. This fort is a legacy of the Portuguese who once ruled Ternate in the 15th century. The fort was built with a solid rock, the fort was called the Toloko fort because it was located right in the area called Toloko, Sangaji village.
Tolukko Fortress is also called the Castle of Holland or the Fort of Santa Lucas. Tolukko Fortress was built in 1512 by Francisco Serao after the Ternate Sultanate was established. It was rebuilt by Schot in 1606. In 1610 it was renovated by the Dutch national Pieter Both. Sultan of Ternate, Mandarsyah once occupied this fort in 1661 with 160 troops. Many people are surprised at the shape of this fort. The form of the fort that counts as “strange” is one of the characteristics of this fort.
Viewed from the front, the Tolukko Fortress building looks quite magnificent because it is in a higher ground position. This fort has three bastions. To get to the top of the fortress we will pass a narrow passageway that only fits two people. That too has been very tight.
The upper part of the fort is rectangular. There is also an underground room that used to be used to store war ammunition. To enter the basement there is an open staircase that anyone can pass. Uniquely the fort is at an altitude so that you can see the entire city of Ternate, the sea of sea tidore maitara and the beautiful island of Halmahera. The fort has a unique beauty that makes many people who want to visit this place, they take advantage of the beauty of the fort for taking pictures.
