Lake Tolire is a beautiful lake located in Ternate, North Maluku. The lake, which is located about 10 km from the center of Ternate, has a unique shape and has an interesting history. Lake Tolire is located under the foot of Mount Gamalama, which is the highest volcano in North Maluku.
Lake Tolire consists of Lake Tolire Besar and Lake Tolire Kecil where the distance between the two lakes is only around ± 200 m, Shadowed by Mount Gamalama, the magnificent panorama of Lake Tolire is right at the foot of the mountain. Not only that, even the green water and cliffs of dense trees around Lake Tolire greatly create a beautiful and cool panorama. However, do you know if there is a mystical story when the lake is quiet? Yes, Lake Tolire is not a water container for human activities.
Let alone trying to swim to feel the lake water temperature, before you try throwing a rock into the lake. Can the rock get to the surface of the lake? No, in the complex of Lake Tolire tourism can sell pebbles to prove that no one can throw stones to the middle of the lake. Strangely, until now there was not a single person who was able to throw rocks to the middle of the lake.
Usually, no matter how far the throw is, the throw will only end at the edge of the lake, or return to the cliffs of the foothold. The story has existed since ancient times. This lake is very mysterious. To just throw a stone into the lake, the thrower seemed to be far from the edge of the lake and no stone could reach the surface. No one knows the depth of the lake, but from the cliffs of the lake until the surface is known to be around 100 meters high.
Once upon a time a father had sex with his daughter until the princess was pregnant. In fact, the father is said to be a village leader at the foot of Mount Gamalama and quite respected by his citizens. After the shameful relationship was discovered by the villagers, this father and daughter also received social punishment by being expelled from the village where they were.
In a very embarrassed condition, his father and daughter left the village where they lived. But they had not had time to leave, a devastating earthquake struck the village. Some residents believe that the earthquake was a punishment from the Almighty because of the sinful deeds between his father and daughter.
The village was shaken with cracked land, water appeared and drowned the entire village and its inhabitants into the earth. Eventually the village became a giant lake known as Lake Tolire. Lake Tolire Besar is freshwater and has many fish, but no one dares to catch fish or bathe in the lake, because they believe that the lake, which is yellowish-brown, is inhabited by many stealth crocodiles.
These stealth crocodiles are often seen swimming in the middle of the lake. The color is white and about 10 meters long. Not everyone can see the stealth crocodile, only those who are lucky can. According to the local community, if they are clean, they have the chance to see stealth crocodiles on the lake. There is also a story, there used to be a foreign tourist who did not believe that there was a stealth crocodile in the lake. The traveler took a bath to the lake and after swimming for a few minutes, he disappeared. Allegedly the tourist was devoured by stealth crocodiles. Another mystery that has not been revealed is the question of the depth of the lake which is said to be limitless.
